As a tree owner or someone wishing to carry out tree pruning / tree removal you should be aware that trees may be subject to legal protection. You may need to obtain permission and or provide notice of your intention to carry out tree work before you start.  

Trees may be subject to legal protection in a range of ways including but not limited to those summarised below

• Trees, tree groups, woodland or areas subject to protection by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).
• Trees located within a Conservation Area (CA).
• When tree felling requires a licence from the Forestry Commission.
• In the case that planning conditions and or restrictive covenants restrict the planting, management or removal of trees.
• In the case that trees are associated with other protected environments, such as Churchyards / Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
• In the case that trees are associated with the presence or use by legally protected species of bird, mammals, etc. and or support legally protected plants such as rare bryophytes and lichens. Find additional information on Trees and Planning here.
